I`m just asking about the two formulations of categorical imperatives in Kantian ethics, what exactly are they and how could one explain why some maxims pass and don’t pass the two formulations? Also give me some modern day examples of these. Thanks.

I'll give this a shot, I have what I'm told is a "killer" ethics test on Monday, but this is what I understand so far.... Categorical imperatives are a "command" that applies to all rational beings independent of their own desires, in other words, you act based on goodwill and trust. Ex. You have a friend who is your friend regardless of what you can get out of the friendship..(ie. floor seats to Bulls game.) The friendship is truly valued or is worth something to you simply because of intrinsic value not extrinisic.
There are actually three formulations of categorical imperative. Of which I can't readily describe because I'm still researching this myself. But according to Kant, everything is equal and fair. Basically he felt our basic duties are to always tell the truth, always keep your promises, never commit suicide. His way of thinking was deontologically based (duty-based). Okay, here, they hypothetical imperatives are considered "if....then" commands. "If you want to go to college, then do your homework", "If you have a dog, then walk it". These impearatives only apply if you care about a certain result or have certain desires like going to school or having a dog. I suggest if you are having trouble understanding any of this, as I was, to get a copy of "The Complete Idiot's Guide To Understanding Ethics", this book is going to be my savior for tests and papers, it puts everything into a perspective that's easier to understand than my text book. Good Luck!!!
