hey you remember something new everyday... i forgot that england was a part of a group...anyway because probably most quality players wouldn't be selected and a civil war might just happened. there are currently arguments revolving the west indies team in cricket because not all players from the caribbean are chosen and each country is angry because of the selections because their player should be in the team...get the message.

I did read somewhere that Tony Blair want to make a UK Team for the London Olympics, because he doesn't want the host nation not having a team in their own sport. The Olympic committee doesn't recognize any of the Home Nations football teams and only accepts teams from the political union of the UK. I don't really like the idea. Also Damien Duff and Robbie Keane wouldn't play for the UK team anyway because, The Republic of Ireland is not a part of the UK.

i wonder why? if there was a UK national team then good players like Ryan Giggs and Craig Bellamy could have had a chance at the international level. What a waste of talent.
Come to think of it, why is it that in the Olympics its the UK and not england, scotland, wales n n.ireland?

Because England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are considered 'Home Nations' and the originators of the game. England and Scotland playing against each other predates even the modern olympics. They each had their own governing body before there was a FIFA, so FIFA can't exactly expect them to just cease being.

Because the English believe they are superior and that other UK countries shouldnt be considered in the same sentance with them. Been like that for centuries. Scotland, Ireland...

It just comes down to what people like to compete under.

I know it's strange that in Olympics they all compete under GBR which is great britain.

But that's not what they want to do in other sports.
