All right, so I just auditioned for a musical and got turned down for a lead. I don't mean to sound stuck up or anything, but I *know* that I was better than most of the people there. The thing is I get so nervous when I have to sing in front of people that it doesn't sound as good as when I rehearse it. I'm really sick of being turned down for good parts because my nerves get in the way. Any suggestions?

If you "*know*" it, then it sounds like you should be able to overcome your nervous-ness. Take a deep breath, and pretend you're practicing and no one's there.

First of all saying that you know your better then the others does make you sound stuck up. If your nervous when you have to sing in front of people and they're not - that's why they're getting picked over you and that makes them better. You can't be in a musical if your afraid to sing in front of people. you really have to get over that.
Go to the subway, or to the mall and start singing- embarrasing? yes. But who cares? if you can sing in the foodcort then an audition's going to be no problem.
If that's too much to start with, get your family and friends together and sing in front of them, you have to start somewhere sometimes the only way to learn to swim is to jump into the deep end of the pool.
If you can sing well then sing for the world, loud and proud. don't be embarrased to put your talent out there.

The only way to beat stage fright is to focus totally on what you are doing. In truth, you can only think one thought at a time. If you think only about the physical requirements of the moment, you cannot think about how you appear doing it. Never expect to totally lose those butterflies, though, unless you can lose the need to appear a certain way to other people. If you can do that, let us all know how you did it.

My best guess would be to try to relax before going to rehearsal; imagine yourself singing the best you can(and imagine the applause you would get after finishing)

Stop trying for the best and go for any part. Just be enthusiastic. Be ready to do it all. As long as you get in, you'll get that big break evetually. Just don't give up.

play the peripheral parts until you overcome your stage fright, then see if you have what it takes. listen to yourself in a recording, and judge for yourself how to improve your singing. don't compare yourself with others, just work to hone your skills.

Remember that the audience is all naked...underneath their clothes. Seriously, they all are just human beings who want to be entertained. You have a gift they want-go out there and give it to them, they WANT to love you!

you have to do a lot of pretending. i would pretend that i am the judge so i would feel at ease. just role reverse.
