People tend to lock up their black cats on and around Halloween for a number of reasons. Animal shelters also won't allow people to adopt black cats around Halloween.
The reason given is often, "We don't want the cats sacrificed in the name of witchcraft." Wiccans tend to be blamed for the brutal murder of many felines, when in reality, it's more likely to be a bratty teenager who thinks torturing animals is cool than it is to be a Wiccan. This is most likely a hold-over from before the middle ages when cats were believed to be witches' familiars.
It's really any cat, but the black ones have this stigma about them which is, again, society that did that. Not nature. Not the Wiccans. The whole thing is really stupid and they do it around here, too.
Wiccans are more likely to be the people working at the shelter and rescuing animals than the ones beheading them and throwing the bodies on roofs of houses.

As the owner of three black kitties, I need to do that every Halloween. Some cuckoos go around snatching black cats for some stupid superstitious cerimonies, where they sacrifice the animals. They should sacrifice watermelons instead. Shelters won't give away black cats in October either.

probably because some nut would think it;s a bad omen and try to harm the cat.where i live there is a beautiful black feral cat 'and when i feed her i hang around and I've seen high school kids trying to kick her telling the other friend 'that's a black cat and they are really bad luck....that's probably why.it;s a crying shame that in 2007 people are still trying to abuse' and do abuse 'innocent animals which their only crime was to be born an animal; and for that people must throw rocks and try to kill or Mame anything that is not human.....

I believe people lock up their black cats so they are not stolen and sacrificed by Satanists. It's probably more necessary in some parts of the country than in others.

because alot of people like to sacrifices black cats on that day they believe that black cats are bad luck so the kill them it happens in alot of places in the united states it has happened in Michigan i know for sure

I don't, its just a superstition for late 1700's-1800's when witch craft was going on they seen they all had black cats it was banned since then on "Holloween"

People in my area do the same thing (some people keep their pets indoors regardless of the color of the fur). It's because of the idiotic teenagers who do cruel things to animals because they think it's a funny prank.
