I will make this simple:
Most if not all business like Intel and many gamers like AMD. Personally I always go Intel to assure myself of compatibility.

Yes, right now Intel makes the fastest desktop processor available. Unless you are buying that particular CPU ... what do you care ?
Chevrolet makes the fastest American car on the market (the Corvette) ... is that reason enough for you to buy strictly Chevrolet .... of course not . That would be absurd.
They are both excellent & reliable. Keep away from opinions that appear biased.
Look for the power you need in a PC & can afford.
Look for upgrade options available on an AMD vs Intel mainboards.
Look for the best "bang for buck" product.
Use this link to compare any 2 Intel & AMD processors performance benchmarks :
http://www23.tomshardware.com/cpu.html
Examine the benchmarks running applications that you may use.
In most cases you will find that the difference in comparable AMD & Intel processors is between 3 % to 9 %... not much really.
Whereas one may be faster in scientific apps the other will surpass that same CPU in mulimedia apps (for example).
I use both brands in a multi PC high end environment & really could not tell you the difference (so far as daily operation) between one or the other.
It remains a personal choice.

If your definition of 'better' means more expensive then Intel, both Intel and AMD make great processors but AMD will save you $$. Keep in mind when you read about how fast a chip is, between the 2-3 top fastest chips, us humans would be hard-pressed to "see" a difference. Both major chip manufacturers are constantly coming out with newer and faster chips. I have built my last 5 machines with AMD chips AMD-compatible motherboards. My machines are screaming-fast and very reliable. There is a point of diminishing returns when building computers. There is always be something faster, always. So I try to maximize the speed vs. cost ratio, For me that means AMD, they simply cost less for a commensurate speed. Plus AMD chips are built to be overclocked and tweaked - that's where the real fun starts.

Neither!!! Intel get you there faster. However, AMD brings a bigger payload. Lets suppose you were going camping. If you chose to bring your car, you may have to compromise on the amenities that you can have on your camping trip because the car can only bring about so much. Taking an 18-wheeler, however, allow you all the amenitites you need, but you will arrive there later than if you had driven your car.
If you are looking for speed, Intel is your guy. However, if you are looking for a reliable payload, AMD is your chip.
Thus, the intended use of the computer often determines the brand and size of processor used.

this might start some fights between peoples opinion and how bias they are on the two companys, but i am an amd fan myself, but from what i have recently heard that the core 2 duo's are most likely the better of the two.
I'm not sure about amd's cpus that may be coming out soon so i wouldnt get your hopes up.

ok this is how it is. core 2 duo is in between pentium nad xeon. amd equavilants to that are the athlon and opteron. they have no in between there is no intermediate...so core 2 duo is better becauseits compared to the athlon that is made to be lowerclass. amd has noplan for a response to the core. so its a better idea for now. like any comp though an investment is an important decision. eventually amd will make something better like they always do and then people with core 2 will regret that they cant update to amd

Ive read alot of reviews on these two chips as i am gonna build a new PC. well i mean from where i stand I'm asking myself the same question as you. right now working to get a dual core 2. its very energy efficient and from what Ive heard and seen from benchmarks it surpasses the athlon. so for now Intel is ahead, but we'll see how amd does later on.

Depends on what you like. Most gamers prefer the AMD chips over Intel because of their better performance and clock speeds.

They are both just about equal. I personally prefer INTEL to AMD but that is just a personal preference without any solid reason why other than it is what I like.
