Would you consider alchemists to be scientists?

I would say no.

They simply tried to create gold out of a base metal, without any basis.

A scientist uses the scientific method. Plans logical experiments and comes to a reasonable conclusion. I don't believe that the alchemists followed this approach

No. They are pre-scientific, and more closely associated with astrology and the occult than with modern science.
