I was just wondering how and when the automobile started being referred to as a car....was it from carriage or was it just a slang word given to the automobile to make it easier to reference.

the automobile "came" to being called a car by a sort of "vehicle"
OR.. It came just like that.

They were first referred to as horseless carriages.
Later known as motor carrriage, motor car then car.
