I am writing a 2000 word research paper on the similar theme found in The Tell Tale Heart and the Fall of the House of Usher.

This is my thesis statement as of now but I'm not happy with it:

Humans may seem normal to themselves or to others, but they can have a second self inside of them that is evil and can ultimately cause them to perform heinous crimes that in the end result in inescapable insanity for the unfortunate human.

My main problem with this thesis is the "Humans may seem normal to themselves or to others" part...in one story the narrator is obviously insane but he denies his insanity (humans may seem normal to themselves)...but in the other story the main character is NOT obviously insane, it's not apparent in the beginning that he has a mental disorder (humans may seem normal to others)

Realllly need help on that first part everyone. Also I'm thinking that my thesis might be a run-on but I'm not sure..is it?

Here's what I would write, but you would want to put it in your own words.

"Despite appearances, people can possess a duplicity of character unrecognizable at first, whether that recognition comes from without or from within."

I'm not sure how to improve your thesis without pushing my own ideas onto you, but yours is definitely a run on.

"The face of an individual often conceals their true nature, but inevitably this inner persona will be revealed."
