What do people in colonial times use to make books?

A printing press that was hand cranked. Gutenberg developed the press in the 1600's, so by 1800 it was pretty widespread.

You mean what "did" which is past tense. They used, I believe, a printing press of sorts.

They did not have books. They used slates.
