Just for the record, because I can't believe how many people are saying this...females come in all the same colors that the males do now, and are more easily kept in a tank with a current because their fins aren't like sails.
But long fins does not necessarily denote a male, their are Bettas with shorter fins known as "Plakats" these are the real fighting fish.
The real way to tell a female betta from a male, especially if they are young is to check for the "oviposter" if the betta is a girl this is a white dot on the bottom of her belly, where the eggs come out.

The males will have the long fins and large tails with brilliant colors, while the females are smaller with small tails and fins, and a more dull coloration. You cannot keep 2 males in the same tank without a barrier to keep them apart or they will kill each other

my petco sells both males and females, females are ugly in my opinion, males have the nice long fins and have more color. F dull, smaller, short fins and are drab. A lot of people own males and only get the F when they want to mate them.
