I read it along long time ago and can remember just afew things about the book. all the parents are gone, can't remember reason, and the children are left alone. the form gangs and one group takes a car to a near by farm for supplies. any ideas?

Maybe it's the boxcar children or The outsiders? But I don't really remember a barn in that one. Those two are just a guess.

This sounds like a WWII book when Jew parents are taken away and the kids hide in a place.
