There were many reasons for immigrants to come to America at this time. First of all, there were highly exaggerated tales of wealth to be had here. People came here really expecting to find streets fo gold, as dumb as it sounds. Then there was the homestead policy. You could get all the free land you wanted as long as you lived and farmed on it. Some people came here to get away from their problems. In England, large numbers of people were given the choice of going to the workhouses for debts or immigrating to the New World and having their debts absolved, as long as they stayed here 10 years. Some immigrants came here for religious freedom. Many Irish came to escape the hunger and poverty caused by the potato famine.
America was a land of opportunity where anyone could start over.

Many came from ireland fleeing the potato famine and trying to start a better life. Most immigrants were poor and were trying to strike it rich in the united states. Unfortunatly for many they never acheived their goal due to extremely low hourly wages in factories that never allowed them to get ahead.
