Long, long before ships switched from sail to steam.

Early sailors wore earrings, and I'm quite sure that was the case in the New World as well.

When I was in High School it started with the cool boys just getting one ear pierced. This was to the terror of the adults of course. I'd peg the first year I saw earrings on guys to be 1982. Of course the bad boys of rock were getting ears pierced back in the 70's.
