I think with this drastic mix of generations, it is slowly but surely changing. Remember, fifty years ago- it was socially unexceptable to have a child out of wedlock or to get a divorce or to leave your family. Values were so different back then. Everything was at a slower pace and women COULD stay home with the kids. It was not like today where a man gets a woman pregnant and then goes on "jerry Springer" because he doesnt think its his and he doesnt want to pay child support. Its sad but true. However, things have changed for the better in the domestic violence department. Police take domestic violence seriously and it could land you alot of time in jail. Even with child abuse. Back in the day it was normal to wip your children and now within a day DFYS will take them away if you smack them. So perhaps this has made a bit of progress.
But do not worry. I think we are going through a complete "Moral Metamophisis" with our country and now with the better availabily of oral contraceptives, child support and mental mealth awareness- things will change in no time :-)

I think that we as a society agree that fathers should support their kids. However, anyone that's worked in the system also knows that there are injustices and, sometimes, nobody does anything to stop or "fix" the injustice because the "deadbeat Dad" just doesn't have the money to do anything about it. I mean there are guys who are court ordered to pay support for kids that are not genetically their kid and, in most of those cases, the woman got a default judgment either because (a) the guy got the papers and didn't have the means to fight the case; or (b) the guy didn't even get properly served, she claimed that she had no idea where he was so they just put a notice in the paper that he never saw and, next thing he knows, his wages are being garnished because although they couldn't find him to let him know that he's being sued, they made more effort to find him once they had a right to garnish his check.

So, no, it's not acceptable to shirk responsibility but, on the other hand, there are men out there who have good reasons to hate the system and their exes.

sometimes there are reasons why these dead beat dad's take off. first they get so far behind in child support that it would take all there money just to make the child support payments. Then the women usually has her men friends to have and the ex husband is left with no money and a massive debt and the court don't want to hear no excuses no matter how the economy is or the status of your health. Yes, most of these guys are bums because the system is very strict guidelines and cuts you no slack. I was told many mean and hurtful things by the police and government but the gist is that nobody want to hear any of your excuses and you get the money or else.
Its a cold world out there and after awhile you are desensitized and lose your self respect and feelings when you lose your rights and humanity. Its very degrading to say the least.
I would like to start a home up for Unwed fathers too...as these guys need a place to hang and shot pool and drink beer without someone bugging them about what their responsibiltiy are...some of these poor saps were lured into the bedroom just so they could give the women a paycheck for life...

I think its still just as disgraceful as always but I think the courts have also gotten more socially disgraceful, so it gets over looked more.
