John Locke believed that in order for a society to exist, its people must sacrifice in order to gain.

We are free, but it costs all of us something. You cannot get without giving, in this sense.

Sounds an awful lot like a question from a Poli Sci class? You would happen to be enrolled in undergraduate studies and taking an American Govt class would you?

Read the Declaration of Independence. Paraphrase in words you can understand. Try and describe the authors political beliefs Read John Locke essays on Natural Law. Would the author of the Declaration be in agreement or not why?

The idea that our rights preced government and that the purpose of government is to protect our rights. As well as the idea that a government that trys to take away our rights puts itself in a state of war with us. Which is nothing more than and extension of the right to exist, and to defend ourselves.

Read his treatise on government its a short book. You will be surprized at the similarity between the ideas of John Locke and the founders of this country.
