I was asked to a professor to define History and I thought this would be a good question for everyone. She wants us to give our own definition and not just a simple textbook answer.

It certainly is an interesting question, though I would think it has been frequently asked over the centuries.

In my opinion, history is an endless non-fiction story written by and still is being written up by human beings.

The main objectives of pursuing history is to know the past in order to know the present better. However, in this particular "story", there is no designated writer. In fact, the writer can be anyone who make an epoch-making event in the process of certain period of time lapse.

For the father of history, Herodotus, history was about recording major human events as accurately as possible and with as careful word choice as best reflects reality.

For Tacitus, a later Roman historian, history had little to do with bland events, but what those events MEAN. When he records speeches made by kings, he writes what he interprets the kind to have meant, not exactly what the kind said.

I prefer the later, because bland event recording does not convey the humanity of history.

History is the recorded events of mankind. All else is prehistorical. In recent times there has been a movement to include oral history. Historians go about asking to tell their story. The recordings are then kept in central storage places for future students of history.
