We purchase oil from these countries, which send it on tanker ships. Remember a few years back when the Exxon Valdez spilt all that oil? That is how it is shipped. When the oil arrives here, it is refined at our refineries and turned into gasoline and other fuels. That is why fuel prices spiked after Katrina. Many of our refineries are in the gulf area and were shut down when the hurricane hit, causing the supply of gasoline to decrease and thus driving up the price of fuel.
