i dont know about insects but slugs you can put salt on them and around the areas that they come from!!! the salt makes them shrivle up pr something...i used to do that when i was little... lol

Ortho and various other companies make pellets you can put out for slugs. I am not sure what sort of other insects you are talking about but there are various insect sprays available also.
One method I found worked well for slugs was to put a lid, like from a mayonnaise jar out in the area where slugs were and put beer in it. They would drink some of the beer and it would kill them.
