The most obvious reason is that they gain an advantage by backstabbing you. The classic example is two people are vying for the same promotion. If one can gain an edge by pointing out your flaws to a boss, then all is fair in war...

They're just being an idiot. Cause in reality there is no real valid reason for anyone to backstab anyone. Jealousy is just one reason of many.

Lack of communication is the basic cause of all such happenings since over a period of time it gives rise to misconceptions & things like backstabbing crop up.

I've had it happen to me a few times. It usually involved another friend of theirs, easily convincing your friend to not like you for even the smallest reasons. That friend seems to be some form of large influence sometimes, like a young sibling looking up to the older sibling.
