One kind is used as the grey stuff between bricks. That is mortar. Another is the name of a tool used by chemists and pharmacists to grind up hard stuff, like the ingredients in pills. Also used to grind up spices by cooks. It is teamed with a "pestle", a small bowl made of ceramic or stone. Ancient peoples used the same arrangement to grind up corn and grains.
