do other things than what their consious mind wants to? For example: A person was overly, extremely mean to someone else. The person they were mean to no longer wants anything to do with the crazy jerk. The person who was being mean wants to talk to the other person and explain why they did what they did. In theory this would be very easy but when the mean person comes in contact with the other person, they seem to forget their plan and act irrationally and only end up making things worse.

Put more simply, why is it that sometimes people will have a goal but seem to keep shooting themselves in the foot?

"the best laid plans of mice and men..." People have EMOTIONS, and sometimes those get out of control. Sometimes we plan to do things, but then situations come up and our emotions come through. Maybe that person said or did something, or the other got talked out of doing it. There are many reasons, but the human mind goes in different directions and is indecisive....and we let our emotions get in the way sometimes....

I think some things are easier said than done. Like if you want to lose weight but you keep breaking your diet. Or you try to quit smoking but you buy a pack after work. Or you tell your wife you won't hit her anymore but once you get upset you hit her again. I think that people want to do the right thing but when it comes right down to it . They take the easiest road for them. Which would be their everyday behavior. They can't find a way to break the cycle. It's a fear of failure or an inability to control ones self . Some people also do things like that as a way to keep up appearances. They don't want other people to think they have gone soft or aren't cool. So even though they have a plan to change their ways. They can't face the peer pressure when the time comes.

For what I am doing, I do not understand; for I am not practicing what I would like to do, but I am doing the very thing I hate. But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good. So now, no longer am I the one doing it, but sin which dwells in me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh; for the willing is present in me, but the doing of the good is not. - Romans 7:15-18
