to be asked. Are you seriously kidding me? This isn't a question now. Skill set, leadership otherwise. It's all MJ. MJ was Defensive Player of the YEar. 9 time D 1st Team. averaged 37.1 for a season. avg. 8 asts and 8 rebs for a season. avg more than 3 steals for a season. kobe has done moer than 2 stls once. mj has done it 10 times. fg % is about .100 better. 7 straight seasons w/ 30+ points. 5 time mvp. i would keep on going but this is becoming redundant and im getting kinda angry that people argue about this so much.

2007-02-28 14:11:09 · update #1

and please do not gimme kobe is younger bs. mj had 37 pts/game when he was 24ish. 3+ stls/game the very next season. avg 8 asts/8 rebs the very next season. if kobe has a stretch like that at all, i will eat my right arm. seriously. and that right there was teh skill set question. f'in ridiculous. im not even gonna talk about the intangibles.

2007-02-28 14:14:31 · update #2

and if you are answering this question. please for the love of god please put some statistics behind it. b/c kobe can't win the intangible fight with what michael has done. HE F'IN REINVENTED THE GAME. the game is different b/c of michael. without michael and bird/magic before him, the nba would not be nearly as popular. he made basketball international. btw just look at teh stat line. just go look at those two stat lines and tell me who is better. if you say kobe, then you are lying.

do people not remember mj's final shot in the '98 finals? i dont think any act could define clutch better. have you tried playing basketball with the flu and stomach virus? well mj did. he won the finals mvp doing it too.

M J - THE REASON IS SELF EXPLANATORY.

first of all, an "overall" player has to have multiple categories, including:
a) Offense
b) Defense
c) Clutch
d) Make players around you better
e) Team leader

d and e sound similar but many team leaders dont make the talent around them better by much: see kevin garnett.

Well, offensively, kobe is the better three point shooter. They can both penetrate at will and finish at ease, but i love MJ's post-up ability.
Defensively, no question. Kobe was good for a couple of years, but nowadays isnt an ALL NBA DEFENSIVE TEAM calibur player. MJ had won a defensive player of the year award. MJ by far.
Clutch: Kobe is the best today, but you can't say Jordan wasn't the best in his day. I give the moderately slight edge to MJ because he made NBA Finals clinching game winning shots as time expired.
Make players around you better: Jordan made EVERYBODY better, even Luc Longley. Kobe doesn't make anybody better. Jordan's assist numbers are higher consistently. Kobe didn't turn smush into anything, while harper was pretty good with MJ.
Team Leader: Kobe is now the leader for the lakers on the court and off the court. MJ was the leader on teh court, but pippen was their off the cour tleader, so i give kobe the leadership edge.

MJ is better offensively, defensively, in the clutch, and better at improvign teammates, while kobe is a better leader. I give the overall edge to MJ due to multiple regular season mvp's (kobe has 0) and multiple NBA finals mvp's (kobe has 0), and is by far the better defensive stopper. no contest. MJ all the way.

I'm kinda past the whole annoyance thing, I realize now that the ones who even dare ask such a question have to be people who haven't witnessed Michael Jordan in his prime. Michael Jordan from 1984-1993 would score 50 points on Kobe and hold him to 15 or 20 points. No exaggeration, I can almost state that as a fact. Kobe is more like Jordan from 1996-1998, when Jordan lost a lot of athleticism, only Kobe has a better outside shot. Pound for pound though, in their primes it would be NOOO CONTEST WHAT SO EVER!

Besides the ridiculously lopsided statistics and accomplishments in favor of Jordan can we pleeease people start to make a comparison when Kobe totally dominates a playoff run. He has had great regular seasons, lets see him score 50, 60, 81 points in a meaningful playoff series and WIN! He has to totally and consistantly dominante the best competition the NBA has to offer on it's biggest stage (The Finals) before we can even put him in the same leauge as Jordan! Think about it; Jordan lead the leauge in scoring, was All-Defense 1st Team almost annually, and went through teams like the Knicks (Ewing, Starks, Oakley), Cavs (Daughtery, Price), the Heat (Mourning, Hardaway) the Magic (Shaquille O'Neal, Penny Hardaway) the Suns (Barkley, Marjlie, KJ) the Blazers (Drexler, Porter) the Jazz (Malone, Stockton) the Sonics (Kemp, Payton)... I may be leaving someone out, but the point is he lead the Bulls during their 6 championship season against those teams and that type of hall of fame talent! That is what Jordan did on top of all of the individual stuff. So, for all the people who want to continue to make the comparison go right ahead, just consider all that stuff first.

It's close but I think Kobe is a better offensive player.
Jordan is a slightly better defensive player but again it's close.

K24 is still only 28(same age as Jordan when he started to win)so we will have to wait to be able to compare.

Yeah MJ was scoring when he was younger.....he was also having loseing season's.Jacking up 30+ shots a game.

__________________________________________

Kobe's career isn't over yet...damn he's only 28 he still has a 5-7 year window to play at his peak.Did Jordan average more point's?.......yes, he was also on loseing teams for most of those years.Jordan around 27-28 started to become a champion. Here's a stat for you K24 at 28=3 time champion MJ=1.At least wait till there careers are over before you try to compare.

That dude who's saying Jordan could hold Kobe to 20.Man they already played against each other when MJ was winning in 98.Kobe was only 19 and dropped 30+ on MJ.

Heres another game when they played....remember Kobe is only 19..he is playing with shaq(so he won't get the #shots that MJ did)
On top of that he was coming off the bench because he was"to young"...MJ lovers ..be afraid..be very afraid(was gonna throw in that 56 point game....but I felt sorry for MJ)

MJ had some great teamates...he wasn't winning anything without PIP.Even without MJ...the Bulls were a great team!
Pip was second in MVP voting and almost went to the finals WITHOUT MJ!........I don't think he(MJ) ever had a winning season without PIP.....and if your going off stats Jordan isn't even the greatest...Russell is, he has more rings then fingers.
___________________________________________

jimmy W..............do you want me to blow up your spot like I did in the your legacy question?Because if your going off of stats then Wilt and Russell win.. remember!........to easy!

It's a disgrace to even ask that! MJ is the GREATEST OF ALL TIME!
Even D-Wade is better then Kobe!
And Alpha,
Kobe is not even close to MJ's league in scoring.
10 scoring titles
He averaged 37 points a game in a season
He averaged 41 points a game in the finals
His career point average is 31 points a game
nuf said, case closed!

MJ and kobe are both people u dont want to get mad that they will score i think MJ is alot tougher and a better scorer and more consistant than kobe kobe has a better shot at the three point line but MJ is better cuz he carried the bulls to many championships but kobe needs shaq but MJ did have scotty pippen and kobe had shaq and did win the championship but now kobe is nothing without a swingman and MJ was better but i see lebron james getting to MJs level

It's foolish to ask this question, and to do it twice? Well... I think you know. My little boy could tell you flat out that MJ is the greatest. Kobe is good, no doubt, but you comparing his greatness to Jordan's really doesn't do Kobe any favors. Just celebrate what he does while he's around and when he retires, we can compare their careers and impact on the league.

The overall best player is and will always be Michael Jordan. Kobe is nowhere near what MJ accomplished on the court and he won't get there.

i agree, it has to be mj, he totally changed the game, and has the stats and highlight reels to prove it, not only is kobe not better but there are several players in the game today that are a lot better than kobe
