You sign the back of the check and write your account number under your signature. No this isn't a dumb question. I hope this helps you.

I take it you are talking about when you send payment in on a bill & they ask that you put the bills account # on the check. If this is the case this is your answer; They want to make sure it gets paid to your account. The part of the bill you send in with your payment can get separated from your check. If this happens it can take them some time to figure out what bill you wish to pay with your check. This might make you payment late. So it is best for you to put the # on the check. Any way that's what the card company says about it. I do it just so they can't come up with a reason to make me give them more money.

If you are looking at the front of a check, the back left side is where you should endorse (sign) checks that are made payable to you. You then write your account number below your signature.

You should endorse the check on the back, followed by your checking account number, followed by the phrase "for deposit only" which ensures that the funds can only be deposited into the bank account of the person to which the check is made payable (i.e. you).

I write the account number of the bill I am paying in the memo spot on the front of the check. On the back where you sign if it asks for more identification that is where I put my drivers license number and finger print.

you should have some deposit slips to use....they already have the number on them. if you don't, ask for some at the bank and there is a spot on there for you to write the acct number. i don't advise writing on the check, because whomever the check came from will get your acct number...
