They are elected, although they shouldn't have to be. As socialist leaders, you know they only have our best interests at heart and would never appoint someone to succeed them who wasn't the same way. It's just a big waste of time and money to hold elections when the best leaders can be chosen FOR you by those who know far more about how to run the government than the ignorant masses do. Castro knows this. Chavez is coming around. It's only a matter of time before other socialist nations do as well.

Socialists can either take over by force or win by election.

A socialist is simply one who believes that he can shape the world into his image through the use of government force. Socialists are people who use government force to remove property from some and give it to another (legalized theft).

They can be elected (usually by promising to plunder the rights and property of a minority and redistribute it to the majority...Chavez did this. It's a kind of legal way to buy votes. Almost all politicians do it to one degree or another; think social security, welfare, prescription drugs, etc)

Depends on the country. Socialism is an economic system. France is very socialist, and they have elections. Venezuela is the same. They had elections, now it appears as if Chavez is no longer subject to elections.

they were elected in Canada and ruled for 13 years due to the right wing conservatives ruining the economy, only favoring the rich, lying to the public, and raising taxes. Once the liberals got power they balanced the books, paid down the debt, and made the country more favorable for investment. They get elected because the conservatives always mess things up bad for the working man after 2-5 years in office.

Economies are not governments, governments have various ways but mostly by election. Economic leaders are another story and are rarely elected by open ballot at least.
