Control of the interior of the Continent, a difference in opinion on the philosophy, the French were mostly out to make money from trading with the Indians then return to France, England wished to colonize the Continent and have permanent settlements. The farther inland they went the more dependent upon the rivers they became, the more Indian tribes they came in contact with the more the two powers came into dispute. The war is often looked upon as a continuation of the War of the Austrian Succession, for to focus upon the American Continent without examining the events in Europe does not render a clear picture.
It did end in a clear British victory and solidified the British Empire, but it also set the seeds of the American Revolution, which negated the majority of the gain made by the seven years wars.

CAUSES:

Churchill described the Seven Years War as the first world war, not only because campaigns were fought in 3 continents (as well as at sea), but also because its causes had worldwide roots.

In EUROPE, the main cause was rivalry between Prussia and Austria. During an earlier war (the war of the Austrian Succession) Prussia had taken the province of Silesia from Austria. The Empress of Austria, Maria Theresia, was determined to get Silesia back: she succeeded in forming alliances with France, Russia, Sweden and Saxony, and (believing that this would be ample to beat Prussia) attacked. Britain got dragged into the European part of the war because the English kings wanted to protect their (personal) province of Hanover from the French, and figured that the best way to do that was to ally with Prussia.

In AMERICA and also in INDIA, the cause was colonial rivalry between Britain and France: they both wanted to dominate colonial expansion in those areas. Native American tribes were also involved in America, because most (not all) tribes feared that if Britain beat France they would lose their lands to land-hungry colonists. In India, regional princes also joined in the fighting, choosing whichever side seemed to offer the best outcome for them.

WHY DID BRITAIN WIN?

In EUROPE, although Prussia had to fight desperately for survival, King Frederick the Great eventually proved that he was a better leader of a better army than anything that his many enemies could put up against him. Britain helped the Prussians to a small extent in the European fighting, with diversionary raids on the French coast; and to a much greater extent with financial subsidies; the British/Hanoverians did win one major battle against French invaders at Minden; but to a huge extent it was Prussia alone that won the war in Europe. The Prussians had some luck. Katherine the Great of Russia, who hated Frederick died, and her successor immediately made peace with the Prussians. The Swedes also made peace, persuaded by the Russians. Frederick was then able to deal with his remaining enemies, the Austrians, French and Saxons. Eventually, peace was restored in Europe, without any significant gains or losses by either side. The main reason for that was Frederick's genius as a general and leader of his country.

In AMERICA, the Spanish joined in the war against the British in 1761: they hoped to get regain Gibraltar and make gains from Britain in the Caribbean; but in fact they were beaten everywhere (and ended up losing Florida to Britain at the conclusion of the war). Most of the fighting was between the French, supported by many Native-American tribes; and the British, with large numbers of colonists involved as well as regular army. In America, this war is generally called the French and Indian War, The reason why the French lost is simple enough: they were very badly outnumbered. They had fewer troops in North America than the British; the Royal Navy prevented them from sending large reinforcements from France; their Canadian colonial forces were vastly outnumbered by the forces from Britain's 13 colonies; and their tribal allies tended to melt away when the French began losing. The main fighting in North America was finished by 1760. After that, the British did more damage to France and Spain by attacking their island colonies in the Caribbean.

In INDIA, where it is better known as the 2nd Carnatic War, fighting between the French and British and their respective local allies had been continuing, more or less, since 1743. At issue was which country would dominate the very lucrative trade between Europe and India. Most of the fighting involved only small contingents of European soldiers: Indian soldiers and allies were employed by both sides. The British victory in India was again assisted by command of the sea. But there was one major battle of great importance, at Plassey (north of Calcutta) in 1757, when the British defeated France's greatest ally, Siraj Ud Daulah, the last independent Nawab of Bengal.
