this is a horrible rule, maybe even worse than the illegal defense rule which outlawed zone defenses(and was completely unenforcable)...with this rule, they are trying to discourage people from playing zones by taking out the centerpiece of most zones, the back center defender who is plugging the lane...this limits the zone's effectiveness and often leaves the defender out of position and leads to easy layups...they only have the rule to appease those who wanted to see zones in the NBA, but it is clear to me that they are attempting to discourage them anyway

It really depends on who is in the lane. If the defender is small, like Devin Harris, then it's a pointless rule that only hinders the action and should be removed. On the other hand, if the defender is large, like Shaquille O'Neal, then the rule prevents them from becoming an impenetrable wall, and will keep the action going. If anything, the rule should not be a nonunsportsmanlike technical foul, but a sideline out-of-bounds ruling with a fresh 24.

First of all, thats not even a question. If you want to know what it means, it is the old rule that a defensive player cannot be in the paint for over three seconds without "defending" a player. I think it should be abolished. There is no reason whatsoever for that rule. If a team is willing to give a wide open outside shot, let them.

GREAT RULE

I think the rule has to stay and should actually be made internationally...Anyone watch the contries play against each other during last summer?. extremely boring...all they do is play zone defense the other time..thats why internatioinal players are such great shooters...the zone forces them to shoot jumpshots. There is nothing to be excited about besides who won the game...
...if this rule is abolished...look for FG% to dramatically drop..less U.S. college players drafted to the NBA... new records every year in 3 pts made/3pts attempted as well as rebounding records.

the 3 second rule congest the middle of the paint...no one will drive....too many hands....

Fun Part about the rule... Led to Vince Carter leaping over the 7 foot European Frederic Weis(even though it was a break-away).

i think so because if you camp in the lane for too long you could block everyone who goes for a dunk/lay-up.
