I want to stay at a hotel on Freemont St. in downtown Las Vegas. I really like the tradition that I feel when I'm there. I want to stay at the 4 Queens, but I was wondering about the other hotels... Does it really matter what hotel we stay at? All I need is a place to lay my head, so should I just find the least expensive and go with it or should I choose a specific hotel?

Also, how much is a cab ride to and from the 'Strip'? I'd like to roll at NY, NY and some of the other party spots, not just stay downtown the whole time...

Suggestions and recommendations are welcome!!

THANKS IN ADVANCE

There have been a couple of questions lately on the Fremont Street hotels. Use the "Search for questions" feature above to read my answers, if you like.

>What hotels are on the "old strip" in Las Vegas<

>Best place to eat on Fremont Street<

Yes it matters which hotel you stay at.

I have a list of requirements
#1-The hotel must have the game(s) that I like to play>My play is limited 99.9% of the time to high quality video poker(9/6 JOB - 10/7 DB - JWKOB - FPDW)

#2-I have to like the hotel, the rooms & the casino.

#3-The hotel must treat me well, for my level of play.>Comp rooms, meals & and other freebies. An absolute minimum would be discount room rates(casino rate)

If the Four Queens fits the bill for your list, then it's perfect.>If you would like a view of the strip from your room you might think about Fitzgerald's, which is next door, and at 37 stories the tallest hotel on Fremont Street, an upper floor South facing room would give you quite a view.

The nicest hotel downtown, by far is the Golden Nugget, it's a beautiful four star hotel, with all the amenities you would expect from one. They are very good about sending out special room rates to those who take the time to sign up for their e-mail list.

My favorite hotel downtown is Main Street Station, nice rooms, best buffet, good VP, very friendly staff, and just as important, they treat me great. The 777 Brew Club is a nice place to eat, and the Pullman Grille is the best "moderately" priced steak house in all of Las Vegas. One of the really cool things about MSS is that it's filled with antiques & artifacts from all over the world>a section of the Berlin Wall seems to be one of the favorites, my personal favorite are the Bronze doors & Facade from the Royal Bank of Kuwait.

a couple of my favorite sites to check LV room rates - always compare to the hotels own web site.
http://www.travelworm.com
http://www.i4vegas.com

to read reviews on the Fremont hotels
http://www.cheapovegas.com
http://www.tripadvisor.com

for LV info - & hotel reviews/links to their web site - etc
http://www.lasvegasadvisor.com
LV maps, for hotel locations >also, up to date lists of all the buffets, nightclubs, "free spectacles", and free hotel shuttles>If you wanted, you could take Sam's Town's bus from downtown out to Sam's Town then from Sam's Town to the strip>At the same time you could check out Sam's Town's Mystic Falls area and the evening show there "Sunset Stampede">The Sam's Town "shuttle" is actually a very nice fleet of greyhound type busses.

Whatever you do don't stay at the Gold Spike, someone suggested this one. The Gold Spike is awful, it's so bad it's a LV joke>read the reviews!! Same goes for the Western.

You can catch the Deuce which will take you to the strip, a 24 hour pass is only $5. A cab is going to be pretty expensive, 4 of us took a cab from Excalibur to downtown, it cost us around $15-$20 and that was 12 years ago.

>we go to LV for 2 weeks at a time 2-3 times a year and have for over 20 years, we use the bus 99% of the time. We even catch the bus from the airport. The #108 Paradise & #109 Maryland Pky North bus both go downtown from the airport.>Many times we are checking into our hotel downtown while those at the airport are still standing in line waiting for a cab.

I'm so glad you asked.

My husband and I stayed at Golden Nugget when we got married. I wouldn't call it luxurious, but it was fancy and well-maintained. Our room was also remodeled and very clean.

We walked through the other downtown hotels to compare and we concluded, at least for ourselves, that GN is the most pleasant and attractive hotel on Freemont Street. Hotel choice matters in Las Vegas. It matters because you can stay at a nice place in Vegas without spending a lot of extra money. And Golden Nugget is a perfect example of one of those places.

You could stay at 4 Queens this time, but also consider GN for future trips.

I found that travelworm.com is one of the best sites for vegas packages, maybe even the best. They have great flight and hotel selection plus the prices are low compared to other sites. You can also try the US Airlines website.

Taxi to the Strip? Around 15.

My husband and I rented a car for about 100 dollars including tax at US car rental for four days. On less than a tank of gas during that time we drove back and forth between downtown and the Strip a few times each day.

I'd love to also give you advice on dining choices, but ours ended up being nothing special or unique. The only food we were really happy with was at our hotel for breakfast, but that was mostly because we paid for it with a 40 dollar food and beverage credit that came with our hotel room. GN was running a special at the time. We ate at Cheesecake Factory one night, which I don't recommend if you have one in your hometown. I would recommend places unique to Vegas.

4Queens is a nice hotel but I'd say the Golden Nugget is better. You are right....it doesn't really matter what hotel you stay at because if you're on vacation you shouldn't be in your hotel room!! That being said I will tell you that at some of the cheaper (Motel 6, etc.) hotel/motels have very uncomfortable mattresses. If you can sleep anywhere then that won't be an issue.

The cab ride will probably be anywhere from $5-$10 depending on where you get dropped off.

there are a lot of hotels from very expensive to very cheap. Freemont is in North LV and quite a ways from the popular area of the strip. You can actually stay at the Luxor for $70 per night and that is a nice hotel.

Stay either at the Gold Spike [3rd & Ogden] or the EL CORTEZ Hotel & Casino on Freemont. Both give u free fun books incl. a free breakfast. I used to work at the Gold Spike Hotel & Casino & it has the best snack bar anywhere. They used to offer 99 cent shrimp cocktails, 24-hrs a day. A slice of Marie Callendar pie for a BUCK.

You won't go wrong . . .
