depends on the year. since you say 1500 and not c10 or k10, i would say it has a 700R4. actually, you can probably tell yourself. Does the transmission shift 5 times? This means it has 4 gears with overdrive, and a lockup torque converter. if you only hear 3 shifts, it's most likely a TH350.

in the early 80's chevrolet started puting the 700r-4 automatic transmission in the trucks, if the truck has 4 gears "overdrive" than it is most likely the 700r-4, and since the engine is a 305 than it is probably from the 80's or the early 90's. but it is possible the tranny could have been replaced.on the turbo 350 and 400, look at the oil pan, if it is almost a perfect square w/ one of the corners missing than it is the turbo 350. if it just has a random shaped pan than it is the turbo 400. hopefully this can help you.

What year? My 1/2 ton '89 1500 w/305 has a 5-speed manual trans.

Depends on what year but it could be a 350 turbo, 400 turbo or a 700R4 most likely those are all automatics.

older ones like 95 and back had a 350 or a 350 turbo

id say 700-R4 if its 80's year. just check when your in the first drive gear see if you can pull it down 3 more times. if it does its an R-4
