Humans feel happiness because of chemicals that are released.
One chemical is called endorphins that are triggered through many acts like orgasms, exercises, etc...

Laughing is a physical reaction to something that is funny or happy-like and also releases endorphins then smiling is just a physical reaction.

What's all that about flesh and blood? Humans feel happiness because it's a drug high. You release neurotransmitters in response to stimuli that you don't even know exist and hold sway over you. Why do you think people cheat on really good partners for skanks with no future?

We feel happiness because originally it helped us survive. All of the things that give us pleasure are necessary from an evolutionary standpoint. We feel happy when we're near our family and friends, which would make us stay together and better survive. Eating and procreating are both generally pleasant activities, and both would help us survive and pass on our genes. Happiness is an evolutionary mechanism just like everthing else.
