if it's XP then use SYSTEM RESTORE
It is found in Accessories and System Tools.

You could try going into the start panel then control panel to Computer Management to Users. You information may be under a different user then the one you used when you rebooted the computer. If there is a different name you recognize from before there. Go to My computer then in the drop down menu into the document and settings folder then click on the user's folder.

Hey, a phone cord wouldn't mess up your computer, anyways you can try doing a system restore(if its Windows XP).
Start->all programs->accessories->system restore-> restore my computer to an earlier date/time, click next, next finish. It will restart your computer & it should be working fine. This will work only if system restore is turned ON already in your laptop.
Other wise, try shutting donw your computer. Then start it normally, once you press the power button to start your computer, keep on tapping F8 key on your keyboard, you will get to a black screen with some options. If you see safe mode, chose it with the arrow keys on the keyboard & press enter. Now, click start-> run->msconfig-> you will get a screen with Startup on top right hand corner. click it, disable all.... click ok. restart your computer in normal mode now & check.

This should help you.

Also, running a recovery disk is always there!

Does your computer have a modem or an ethernet connection?
Do you mean reboot (restart, turn off and then on) or restore (set to earlier date) or reload (restore to factory default, lose everything added since it left the factory)?

IF you have an ethernet connection and he tried to plug a telephone connection into it, (real smart, Duh), he MAY have caused damage to the MB, since telephone lines have "power" on them, AND the connector is different. (Rj-45 instead of RJ12)

Assuming you have XP or later, you could try to "restore" the system to an earlier date, IF it can be booted.

If it won't boot, I suggest you have it checked by a good shop. He MAY owe you a new laptop. (The factory is NOT likely to replace it if it was damaged through an attempt at improper connection to a telephone line!)

Try restoring it to yesterday or so (with system restore), if that don't fix it use your recovery disks...
