The only thing i will say is they both do about the same thing here is the prob tivo breaks you own it you pay to have it shipped you pay to have it fixed you wait for the thing to come back in the mail your without it they both have a monthly fee however if the dvr breaks you call the cable company they bring you a new 500 dollar machine your back up and running at absolutely no cost to you hmmm not rocket science or wait maybe you can call the tivo man lol good luck

Go with the Tivo unless you want an HD-DVR player. The Tivo S3 supports HD but is very expensive and for the lifetime it's probably cheaper just to rent the cable company's version.

However, Tivo does have more features and they're fairly easy to hack. I haven't seen S3 hacks yet, but S2 hacks are plentiful. This means you can add additional hard drives (cheaply) or exchange it for a larger HD. I put a 300GB HD in mine which originally came with a 40GB. It has some hacks that allow you to do special functions too (i.e. FTP transfers, etc).

I like my Tivo. It has a lot of features that cable company's don't have like web scheduling, Tivo2Go, checking Yahoo! Weather, etc. The interface looks better too.

The DVR. it offers a dual tuner making is possible to record two shows at a time. the newer DVR's have HD capabilities. Depending on the area you live in, you can fast foward up to 4x the speed to skip thru shows or channels you dont want. Also the newer DVR's have HDMI and DVI ports for enhanced video experience....TiVO? blah!

I would get Tivo. I have a cox DVR and in the state I live in, they're having prollems with the motorola DVR boxes they've installed. the hard drives overheat and won't record so they keep replacing the boxes, but there's a waiting list for new ones. my parents have Tivo and they don't have that prollem.

Hi J,

TIVO is a lot easier to program and work (play) with. The only downside to TIVO is the monthly fee. I feel I get my moneys worth for all TIVO gives me & my wife.

With TIVO you can record by program name & TIVO worries about the channel & start & stop time etc. You can tell TIVO you like John Wayne & it will find & record anything he is in. If you allow it TIVO will learn your likes from what you record and then will record things it thinks you will like. It is very good at this.

We have two TIVO's. One HD & one regular. I can't say enough about them.

If you don't mind the monthly fee by all means go TIVO.

I recommend TiVo for the same reasons the other recommend, better features and more user friendly. Regarding the monthly fee, Negotiate the price with them, explaining the competitors are charging $xxx. Give them a compelling reason to get your business by lowering their fees. I did, and it worked. They have excellent customer service.
