I used to love history class, but now I hate it. My history teacher started teaching at my school this year. I'm in grade 10, and am learning about Canadian history. At first, I thought my history teacher's way of teaching was very refreshing; he pointed out to us biases in history around us, like our textbooks, and told us how the way history is taught to us can affect us. I found this really interesting, and looked forward to going to class. We started doing treaties and even then I could feel like my history teacher was starting to dislike me. He taught us treaties, but he forced his opinion on us. I'm not trying to sound racist or anything, but he kept saying how natvies had been completely racially destroyed . Now, I agree with him, but I like to hear both sides of the story,so I questioned him a couple times and he just said “I disagree" and brushed me off. I feel like if I don't regurgitate his views, he'll hate me even more. Can racism go both ways? What should I do?

I found that since I was interested in History, I learned a lot more OUTSIDE of class than I ever did IN class. One bad teacher is no reason to hate ANY class! Bias can be found in History textbooks as well as in people, as foul as you find this - you will have to accept this. Try not to rely on just your feelings alone, and if you are suggesting he is a "racist", you will need more evidence than just "he kept saying how natives were completely racially destroyed" to prove anything. You have the right to question your teacher, and even if he brushes you off and disagrees with you, you should continue to ask for both sides of the story. If it is marks you are concerned about, "regurgitate" for his tests, but keep in mind your answers are biased. He may not hate you, he does sound like he is too concerned with telling History from his side of the story, but we know better than that! I had a teacher who was similar to this in my high school History class too.
Keep up the good work!

As a college student I can tell you that I've experienced a lot of professor's whose views I disliked. Once I decided I would enroll into a women's studies class out of interest. The professor teaching the class was awful to me - you could tell she hated men with every bone in her body. I was scared to ever talk to her - she would always snarl at me (because I was one of the few guys in the class). It also sucked always getting C papers when I looked around the class at a bunch of A's all the time. You know the name on the paper got me a point reduction of at least 10% or more.

I'm usually a very good student - but that class dropped my GPA a bit.

Dont worry, i do not like my teachers either. I think they think just because I'm hawwiian, they can ingore me for some reason, espeically this bitchy girl coach, i was talking to her and she was making eye contact with me and then she just deciided to cut me off and then she looked at me again. I do not like her or any of my teachers except for one.

I think every kid goes through this, maybe he's not being racist but theres another eason why he cuts you off. My teachers gets on my nerves too

What do you care what he thinks? His views will not change your life in any way. Just take the test, pass the class and move on. You are really getting upset over nothing.

Any good teacher will not push his opinion on any student. He should let them make the decision on their own opinion.. He needs to be open for each student to express what they feel.. sometimes you wonder where they find these teachers... talk to your counselor about how you feel,,, good luck
