There "Nine" lives may actually come from their ability to always (almost) right themselves in a fall and land on their feet. This is due to their many many bones and muscles. They actually have more bones than a human.

i think this is because of cat's reflexes and body balance.

They fall from windows, balconies, trees and they live.
or think about little kittens. they survive even in the hardest conditions, without their mothers .
i have watched a documentary film about cats, and it was telling that cats are the number 1 adaptable living in the world.
i mean you pick up a cat and drop her in to the forest, it survives. but a dog? no chance. the dogs could even die because of depression when their owners leave them . :( so unhappy but true
cats are strong and capable of surviving, so we say they have 9 lives.

Because they bounce better! Cats are just lazy, and do nothing but longe about all day, like college girls! Besides cats are representational of Christ...and because it takes 8 tries before a cat can get it right, and because Joe and Dan dont like them!

In addtition to previous answer, they have nine lives for their ability to scape being run over by cars on country roads... Although not all have nine lives....my dog once ate my mom's cat all seven kittens the same day they were born... Sad!
