Yeah, I don't think it is a "saying." Never heard it used that way. My brother used to have a problem with grinding his teeth, especially in his sleep. Its where you scrape your bottom teeth w/your top teeth and it makes an awful sound. It can actually grind the teeth and wear them down.

Grinding your teeth is when you slide your upper teeth and lower teeth together with force. This can wear down the enamel leaving the teeth vulnerable to cavities and breakage.
