What do you think would happen if Americans stopped voting defensively (that is against candidates that they didn't support) and started voting solely for candidates that they did support? What do you think would be necessary to implement such a change? And what do you think would be the results?

For the record, I do not believe that all Americans vote this way. However, I have seen it over and over again in the last two Presidential elections and I wanted to get some other people's feedback.
One thing that really has not been touched on in depth is what kind of changes could be made to fix the situation.

To do what you suggest we all are going to have to get more angry than we are now. Today we are still asleep, passive, and ignorant. For candidates to reflect a different vision than the corporate one we see now, we need to wake up and get smart about the world and our politics. Politicians would be fearful of and give respect to an intelligent electorate and respond accordingly. But, they watch and see that they can send $12 billion in cash to downtown Baghdad and have it disappear, and we don't do anything about it. What threat are we when that happens. Only half of us vote, and not very intelligently at that. If 80% of us voted smart, it would be a different world. When the cats are away, the mice they will play!

Well, that's what I always do but that requires doing your research. Voting defensively gives the impression you are too lazy to learn about the issues and where each candidate stands. Same is true for voting strictly along party lines. Example: Just because you don't like the current president, don't assume all Republicans were cast from the same mold. Just because you can't stand Hillary, don't assume all other Democrats believe as she does. I'm saying you need to look at where all the candidates stand on the issues and make an educated decision. Don't just listen to the propaganda. Be suspicious of a candidate who's sole tactic is to mudsling. That tells nothing about what that person is for - only how good they are at talking smack. Really listen. Are they just telling us what's wrong with the current administration - or are they telling us specificaly what THEY INTEND TO DO to fix it? Anyone can be a critic. We need problem solvers.

If Americans started voting for candidates that they actually support instead of voting AGAINST candidates that they dislike, voter turn out would be in the single digits!

Fewer votes but little overall difference. The point of voting and the different types of semi-democratic rule is to keep absolute power from corrupting absolutely. Floating voters decide elections and the most important thing they can do is float away from administrations that become stale or corrupt before they become malignant. One man personality cult states only really develop out of cultures that are alien to the Greek, Latin, British type democracies and republics.

The only way tp omplement that would be to have 2 or more good candidates for each office. Good luck with that 1. Why do you think the right to vote is called "sufferage"?

good question frank. I have a few liberal friends and during the last pres election one gal i work with was talking about how she was going to vote for Kerry at that time.
I asked her... are you voting against Bush or are you voting FOR Kerry. She admitted she was voting against Bush although it took her a day to admit it.
To vote your conscience you have to think instead of just react.
I hope people vote for people who represent what they feel is right. regardless of yoru ideologies. check out the candidates.

Your observation is largely right we vote against the opposition and not for our candidate.

Nothing would happen because it doesn't matter who you vote for in the US the Govt. is run by special interest groups & lobbyists not politicans or the American people who vote for them.
