does it matter if it is foam or cardboard?

I've answered similar Q's.

No offense but consider "Physics" and other natural laws.

Sound is LESSENED by many factors. DEADENED is relative.

Consider that a wall, IE: one that separates YOU from another room, already has two layers of sheetrock likely 1 inch thick total, and approx. 3 1/2 inches of AIR. Static air is not a sound altering "device" strictly.

BTW I'm not trying to bore you.

An egg carton is paper, in essence, and in the CUPS is air. A better but still poor method would be to carpet your walls, floor, and ceiling.

Think of a SOUND studio, and the CONE shaped foam panels attached to the walls. Sound basically not only travels a distance, but can be absorbed, or bounced back, depending on the substances used to accomplish that. In a sound studio for example the foam, cone panels are designed as much to absorb the sound inside the studio and reflect or repel out side sounds. The idea is that the ONLY sound heard in a RECORDING will be just what is created by the voice or musical instrument in the recording.

If this relates to someone wanting to play drums in a basement,,,smiles, put them in the garage. If it relates to an apartment and noisy neighbors, yurn up yer own music,,,smiles

What, like the regular ones they put eggs in at the supermarket? That would be crazy. No, you must be talking about the "egg carton" corrugated foamy finger stuff, like they use on mattresses. Yes, that will insulate against sound, a little, and it will dampen most every word you say in the room as well.

BUT... all the corrugated sides will get disgustingly dusty, and cobwebby. Foam one will soon begin to come apart, so if there is a cardboard material that does the same thing, I would use that, as it would probably be easier to clean, cheaper, and easier to throw away.

A second layer of regular or stuccoed drywall may be just as good, or better at keeping sounds out, and will be way easier to clean. You'll need to know where the studs are, and use extra long studs to install it. taping the joints, plastering the corners, painting, and sticking on your trim near the floor sounds like a rather daunting task, but if you've got the strength, and a few friends to help, it really won't be much harder than cutting and gluing all the thousands of pieces of egg carton you'd have to do.

Maybe-It depends upon what you mean by sound proof. The mass and material of the egg cartons will reduce sound waves passing through a little bit (i.e. trucks driving by) but it may not even be noticeable depending upon the existing wall and frequency of the sound you're trying to block. Egg cartons do a much better job to diffuse sound waves because of their corrugated shape. In other words, it will reduce sounds bouncing off of the walls. This is useful in recording studios where the sounds are generated inside the room. If you want to sound proof a room, the normally accepted practice is to build a room within a room. If this isn't practical, I've heard great results from hanging a carpet or moving blanket from the ceiling over the wall.

No, not really in either case.

The foam material will be much better in dampening sound than a cardboard carton, but neither has enough mass to do that much, especially trying to block lower frequencies (bass).

No, it won't soundproof your walls. Soundproofing is done via two different ways: non-moving air and weight/mass

Closed cell foam is a good way to stop/deaden sound because it has all of the little pockets of non-moving air inside it. If you use a closed cell phone, which is what I would most highly recommend for soundproofing. I would recommend using a foam that is fire retardent, otherwise you create a serious fire hazard. Foams can have certain chemicals added to them when they are created that makes them fire retardent.

The more mass something has the harder it will be to vibrate. Lead is also a good soundproofing material due to it's density/weight.

The barrier also has to be solid. Sound will travel through anywhere there is a crack or through anything it can vibrate.

I have a friend in central Europe who has a band... a garage band. They rent a separate garage (like, not attached to a house) where they practice and keep the drums & such. They lined the WHOLE THING with egg cartons... yes, the ones you buy eggs in. (They saved them forever.) It definitely deadens the echo a lot, but the thing is you have to put it on the walls and ceiling & it's best with carpet on the floor.

His suggestion is the bigger cartons for like 3 dozen eggs are better than 1-dozen cartons, but either will work. :)

Patriot Self Defense system succeeds for 2 primary reasons. The first is that it use basic steps integrated from all the best fighting designs around. The second is that the manufacturers of this program didn't stop there, they took these steps into the lab and ran all sorts of scientific examinations to accumulate as much data as feasible before readying to function to evaluate this data and put together a clinical industrialized self-defense system that quite honestly changes the industry.

yo puff, the egg cartons is just not a good idea. try cork panels. they're cleaner and easier to install. can be purchased from craft store, home improvement store, k-mart, etc.. it's not exspensive either. i've bought them in packs 1/2" x12"x36 or 48"

this would work yes however that is a huge fire hazzard.
you can buy sound boards that you put on the wall that have some fire retardent in them . there are a number of products you can use i suggest you use a commercail product due to the fire potential of other things.
