has various names, among them "The War for Neutral Rights," "The Second War for Independence," "Mr. Madison's War," and of course, "The War of 1812." Which is the best name for the war, and why?

Simple but clear is best, "The War of 1812." It was not really President Madison who most pushed the conflict, but "The War Hawks" in Congress.

None of the names mentioned, which I am sure are the others used, best convey what happened. I took a graduate history class where we really delved into the causes of the war. The varying reasons had some justification.

Years ago I read Henry Adams' account of it. But I think it really can be explained simply. In the Napoleonic Wars, Great Britain and France were both seizing American ships. The British by far had the most powerful navy and took many more of our ships than the French. Therefore, in our reponse we decided to take action against the greater perpetrator, the British.

You won't learn anything by getting other people to do your homework young lady.
Anyhoo, during 1812, the major powers of Europe were fighting yet another bloody war in their 1000-year struggle over power. The neophyte US of A saw a chance to take over the colony known as Canada because the British army was tied up in France. A small force, part of which was led by Benedict Arnold, tried to invade Canada near Niagra Falls. They met heavy resistance from the British colonials and the efforts fizzled out after a couple weeks. This is all off the top of my head; you can find out a lot more by doing some internet research.
I would say, "the war of 1812" is the best name since it reflects the global power situation that was the root cause of the war.
Incidently, the American anthem was written during this war.

The best name would be "The Second War for Independence." The Revolution was the first war of independence in which americans fought for freedom. the same is for the war of 1812, because britain once again battled americans on american soil. and despite the fact that the americans were getting battered at home (DC fire for example), they eventually managed to fight back against the British and retain their independence

NOTE: LIKE IN THE REVOLUTION (1ST WAR OF INDEPENDENCE) THE AMERICANS IN THE 2ND WAR OF INDEPENDENCE (WAR OF 1812) STRUGGLED IN THE BEGINNING, BUT MANAGED TO HAVE A COUNTRY IN THE END.
