Like above stated, the only purpose is to be able to tell the difference between the balls. Tennis courts often have no guard in between them and if you mishit, your ball may go into the other court. Thus, you can say something like "I'm using Penn 3's" or "Wilson 2's" so you don't get mixed up with the other players.

There are numbers on tennis balls so you don't lose them. Say the people playing next to you have a 3s on their balls. You have a 1. That way you get your ball back and don't get confused.

its so when ur playin with people next to u...u can tell which ball is urs...so if u hit a ball on someone else's court..say u have a penn 2 and they have a penn 4..well..u can easily figure out which ball is urs

The numbers are just to help keep track of the balls - they have no effect on gameplay and every "number" of ball works and plays exactly the same when new.

To keep track of your balls- Ha Ha. Seriously -that's what the number is for!

Durability mostly. 1s are great but don't last as long and 8s come practically dead but you can beat the **** out of them for a while. Personally, I like playing on 3s.
