I feel like I'm always saying the wrong things with my friends, and recently on a website I accidentally didn't follow the rules and they gave me a very sharp talking-to. I just feel totally ruined and worthless (the fact that one of my best poems was ruthlessly criticized didn't help) and I don't have depression. Any suggestions on cheering me up? (Please don't suggest online jokes. I hate those - they never make me laugh.)

I really liked Millstones answer, but perhaps something shorter would help too. Actually you sound like me. You tend to implode on yourself too. Like, "Why'd I say that?! (Do that. Or whatever that.) Sometimes I feel like retching when I think of a misconception someone got when I said, or didn't say something. That's been some years ago now, though. I've come to realize it's best just to get on with things, and quit obsessing over things and bashing myself. And it really does work. "Get over it" is great advice for the worry wart in you. I'll bet you are really a terrific person, and make a wonderful friend because you do care so much. So try to remember to care about yourself too, and feed yourself a compliment once in a while. Bet you'll think of loads once you get started. And even more important- people who belittle you or make you feel dumb are NOT good friends, and you do NOT have to play like you enjoy their company, or put up with their crap. Find people who are pleasent to be around. That should help the most of all! Many blessings to you!

Did I say shorter?

I understand where you are coming from. I feel like I am always saying the wrong things sometimes too. Try to forget about the website. I know this can be hard to do since it upset you. I write down my honest feelings on paper. I try to be honest about where my feelings are coming from. I might be afriad of failure on something important to me. Your poem sounds really important to you which hearing harsh words about it will bring you down. The only person who needs to value it is you. It is worth it no matter what anyone else says. The fact that you are talking about how you feel is very good and you are not worthless. Everyone has felt that way at one time so just wait for it to pass. It will and you will be fine! Keep pressing on!

it's a good thing that you believe that you do not have depression and you are aware of the possibility, so stay at the right track...
obviously you are just stressed out from specific subjects and you need to get things out of your chest, you should do that no matter how people may belittle your personal problems and issues, still these issues are big in your eyes and you should face them in order to move on...
reading some jokes and laughing this moment is not the answer, but posting such questions and letting your emotions out by writing poems could be the beginning, continue with that and good luck...

Positive thinking is overrated...you cant change what other people are doing to you by how you think

Gina, did you notice the difference between the women's and men's answers? Do not cast your pearls before swine lest they trample on them.

Certain foods make me feel good: raw, organic fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, etc. Aerobic exercise of any kind out in the sun makes you feel wonderful. Don't believe what retarded people tell you...that the sun is bad for you....Eat your beautiful-skin-producing blue / red berries, and other foods that grow in the hot sun, that protect you from the sun, and get out there. There is nothing like morning sun to uplift your spirit. (Many plants love the morning sun too...the afternoon sun, not so much.) ♪♫ ♪♪♫ ♪♫♪

Been to a doctor? Might be depression. Could be helped tremendously by SSRI's. But see a doc for that.

no one can cheer you up....sorry ...but it really all comes from with in your self. Start with positive thinking ( it really does work ) and even if you know its a lie say things positive anyway ( to yourself ...in your head) say " this is a great day...I feel good about myself....I am happy " get the idea ?? You can do it ...and I know you WILL FEEL BETTER...good luck...you CAN do it...

I know just how you feel, you just need to keep reminding yourself what a wonderful person you are, even when you don't think you deserve it. Because you do.
