I cheat. I find another poem and then use that poem's meter or syllable rhythm with my own words to make a new poem. It helps. Also, I got a little book on rhyming words. That helps a LOT. (I am not good at all or educated in writing poetry, but, I have to for little books that I write for very young children. My poetry sounds like, . . . "I'm a shark and my name is Booth. I head somebody lost a tooth!" . . . : )

A sound poem is one that uses the poem to mimic the sound a certain object or event makes (tick-tock, DONG, tick-tock, DONG would be a grandfather clock striking on the hour.) Another example could be:

Alka Seltzer

burn burn, heartache, burn
plop, plop, fizz fizz,
gurgle gurgle, gulp,
aaaahhhhhhhh

Simply break down an event (rain falling on a roof, waiting for a phone call, filling up at a gas station) into various stages of sounds and link them together.

The website below has alot better examples (although I came up with the Alka Seltzer idea before I went there).

Your talking about "onomanopia". If your having a hard time writing your poem- know this... some of the greatest poets made up words to describe sounds. For example, Edgar Allen Poe made up tthe word "Tintinabulation" to decribe the sound of bells in his poem "THe Bells". Perhaps you can do that. Also to exaggerate something, writers often use aliteration where every word in the line begins with the same letter. Like..."Tortured by the tantalizing tick-tock" or the famous "Peter piper picked a peck..." THink of a sound that really annoys you and write about that. I hope this is help
