My doctor listened to the heartbeat a few days ago. It was loud. Then he told me in a month, he will schedule me for an ultrasound. Then he said, from their I will find out whether if I'm a boy or girl (if the baby cooperates), then he said and we will also find out if you are having twins or multiples. I was surprise he said cause, wouldn't he able to tell from listening to the heartbeat? Please, any twin mothers answer my question. Did any of you listen to the heartbeat and only heard one and then ultrasound confirmed you are carrying more than one???????

In the first trimester sometimes you cannot tell that there are multiples. If one baby is hiding behind the other in the womb, they are small enough not to be seen on the ultrasound and you may not be able to hear the second heartbeat. When the babies are larger and not so easy to hide behind each other during the 20 week ultrasound, then you would be able to know that there are twins or not :)

If you don't have an ultrasound or until you do it is very easy to miss multiples. Before the time of routine ultrasounds, I didn't know I was having twins until 10 days before I delivered. My Dr thought I was having a big breech baby. They did pelvis x-rays to measure and decide if I could deliver vaginally. The x-ray showed 2 - what a surprise. One of the twins was under both placentas so they never heard the 2nd heartbeat. They were born 2 weeks early and weighed 6 lbs and 6 lbs 8 oz. They are 25 this year.

I'm not sure how far along you are, but most times multiples are suspected early on. I was only 8 weeks and showing visibly and it's not just left over chubbiness from my other babies. Unfortunately for me, I just have a big uterus, no twins.

sometimes if the heartbeats are in unison it is hard to determin. there is no way to actually tell unless you have an us. your uterus should be measuring slightly larger by external palpitation
