I am very good, and have played for over 28 years. I was pretty good within a year of practicing about 3 hours a day. I learned music theory at the same time and by means of that, and studying some of the best guitarists out there (then Robert Fripp, Steve Hackett, David Gilmour, later Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, Pat Metheny) I developed a decent technique and the ability to "hear" something new and original, to build my own style. Now there are hudreds of thousands of fast and precise players out there, and yet Keith Richards is one and alone - because no one else had that style. If you got no unique style, you're hopeless, so no matter what you practice or learn, make sure you work on your style, too. And it all depends on talent - you may be faster or slower. I think your passion should be getting good and playing music - if your motivation is becoming famous, I don't think you'll be much good.

There is no specific answer to your question. It all depends on your aptitude to the subject. Some people practice for hours and hours and never get good enough, others can play at a pro level within a few weeks. My brother was one of the latter, I am the former. People have musical gifts, and if they learn an instrument, it's easy and they can excell. Some people have heart and work really hard, but still may never make it. You just have to start down the path, work hard, and see what happens.

the guitar is a very diffucult instrument to become a professional at. I would practice at least 2 hours per day learning all chords and playing techniques, because the guitar is something that might be easy to learn at first, but very very hard to master
