I am writing a research paper on the causes of the Civil War. I know almost everyone is going to say slavery, but that really wasn't the MAIN cause although it was a major issue.

I have already got state's rights, unfair legislative representation, and high tariffs...but if anyone would like to add more ideas or contribute to the ones already listed that would be great.

thanks a ton!!!

I think you are not really asking for more causes, because there are plenty of them available by Googling. To organize your paper, you might want to divide the causes into economic differences, cultural differences, and Constitutional differences.

Only -one-tenth of Southerners lived in urban areas and transportation between cities was difficult, except by water - only 35% of the nation's train tracks were located in the South. Also, in 1860, the South's agricultural economy was beginning to stall while the Northern manufacturers were experiencing a boom.

The south wanted it's Independence from the Union. They wanted to start there own nation. The north said no, so they fought over it.
Of course slavery was also a key reason.
