One concept of data analysis is normalization. If you normalize the data you can draw comparisons when situations are not exactly the same. For example, baseball:
If one player is at bat 100 times and you want to know if his performance was better than a player who at bat 120 times, you can't tell by who got the most hits. But if you normalize the data into batting averages, you see who performed better.
