I want to start my Masters in fall 2008 but I am so confused about which program to do and which school to attend. I have 5 years working experience in the media; for 5 years I have been a tv news reporter. However in the past few months I left the media and I am now working as a public education officer for an environmental agency, where I plan events, do PR, and conduct public awarness campaigns/exhibitions. My passion is communicating with people and getting my message across no matter what medium I choose, however I really don't know what to pursue my Masters in and which school to attend. Please someone help me!!!

A good starting point in deciding this is to ask yourself: WHY do you want to get a Master's degree? What will be the benefit? I'm not being factious, but do you need the degree to advance at work? Do you just think it is something you should have or you want to have? Do you think you want to teach and so the advanced academic credentials are necessary?

Answering the above will begin to clarify what to study. Once you know that, then you can define the best places to study. Or maybe answering the above will simply tell you that it's time for another job change, and going back to school isn't really what you want to do. My guess is that having the advanced degree isn't going to make a huge difference in your job advancement or your salary because for the kind of work you are describing, graduate work isn't an expectation usually.

So back to the very first question: why??? It's the key.

One idea may include teaching people how to communicate- like Linguistics (have you ever read any of Doctor Deborah Tannin's books on the communication differences between not only men and women but also different cultures?). I'll admit, in our current technological society, we have lost our skills of communication because we rely more on Internet chatting and do not go out and socialize with other people as much; furthermore, it can be very difficult in financial situations and other situations too that also hinder this. Maybe you could get a masters degree in helping people bring back basic fundamental communication skills, like myself! I can write well, but I have been subjected to all kinds of factors that make my verbal skills not so good! What's a good way to start a conversation on a date without sounding like a geek or boring? How can you maintain good communication with the opposite sex in order to maintain a good relationship and reduce fighting? These are some ideas that may help you out and a lot of the rest of us too!
