Vaginal spermicide can come in variousforms such as creams, foams, gels, and films. Spermicide is inserted deep inside the vagina before intercourse preventing sperm from meeting an egg. It is best used in combination with another barrier method such as a condom. Vaginal spermicides do not protect against HIV. Spermicides are between 71 and 82% effective.

Using them with a barrier can increase your protection slightly.

A cervical cap is a small latex or silicone thimble-like device used in conjunction with spermicide and inserted into the vagina before intercourse. Cervical caps are between 68 and 91% effective.

A diaphragm is a dome-shaped flexible latex or silicone barrier that is used in conjunction with spermicide. The diaphragm is inserted into the vagina before intercourse to cover the
cervix. Diaphragms are between 84 and 94% effective.

Any birth control method that isn't used exactly as described will not be very effective.

Does Spermicide Work

2016-12-14 03:49:39 · answer #2 · answered by mattes 4 · 0 0

When used alone and used correctly, spermicides have a failure rate of 6 %. In other words, they are effective 94% of the time. Compared to other methods of birth control, however, spermicides are notorious for their high rates of "user failure", meaning people use them incorrectly and a pregnancy results. User failure with spermicides averages at a whopping 26%! Even the rhythm method's user failure rate is only 12%. Other than crossing your fingers and just hoping for the best, spermicides without condoms are one of the most ineffective methods of avoiding pregnancy.

It's too risky for me, so I've never relied on spermicides alone. I can't make a brand recommendation.

How Effective Is Spermicide

You are being responsible. If you do not want to father a child, condoms alone are risky. How risky they are depends on how conscientious you are with your practice. Hold your ground. Make sure that YOU are comfortable with any risk involved, after continuing your assessment and research. Being a father is a lifelong commitment. With typical use, 85 percent relying on male condoms will remain pregnancy free. With PERFECT use, rates are really quite a bit better. Here’s a table with effectiveness of various methods, both when used "typically" ie not 100% correctly and consistently, and also rates when used extremely diligently (you know what kind of person you are, and how diligent you would be!) This is from the fda website: Pregnancy Rates for Birth Control Methods (For One Year of Use) The following table provides estimates of the percent of women likely to become pregnant while using a particular contraceptive method for one year. These estimates are based on a variety of studies. "Typical Use" rates mean that the method either was not always used correctly or was not used with every act of sexual intercourse (e.g., sometimes forgot to take a birth control pill as directed and became pregnant), or was used correctly but failed anyway. "Lowest Expected" rates mean that the method was always used correctly with every act of sexual intercourse but failed anyway (e.g., always took a birth control pill as directed but still became pregnant). 20-50 out of 100 people using spermicide alone get pregnant each year. I got this from the FDA website. Check it out...it shows a bunch of different options and how effective they are so you can decide what's right for you!

I used spermicide without a condom faithfully for about 3 months. As for how well it works...Im seven months pregnant so I wouldnt recommend it for someone not trying to have a baby.

They are about 80-95% which isn't great: The sponge is supposed to be the most effective. I used the films and personally I find that no matter how dry your fingers are they stick and are a big pain in the ass, I know a lot of people that agree and a few that don't.

Diaphrams, cervical caps and Lea's Shield are slightly more effective, but not by much.

You could combine them with withdrawal which when done properly is 80-96% effectively. But there are rules and not every man has the control to be able to do so.

Well ... it's okay every once in awhile. I used spermicidal film a few times. You can only use it a certain number of times per day, it can cause cervical irritation. It's not foolproof.

It works because Nonoxynol-9 acts as a barrier of corts between his sperm and your cervix. It kills the sperm on contact.
