The coffee arrives along with a glass of water with a teaspoon balanced on top of it. This happens in most cafes and restaurants. I have seen it in other places but mostly Vienna

It is to drink after the coffee and to cleanse your palatte... Often the water also comes with lemon juice and sugar to make your own kind of still lemonade. I went to Vienna when I was 16 and since then I got into the habit of having a cold drink with my coffee and do it to this day . I don't just drink water though but often have a fizzy drink or something. I think it is a good idea as coffee can leave an after taste and also leave a strong smell.

It happens all over Europe. Usually where the coffee is strong. Like Portugal for example. Its just the way its done, most people in the country drink their coffee that way.

Same in Greece - water with everything. I even tried ordering a glass of water, and received - yes - two.

WHO SAID GREEEEECE???????!!!!!!!!???????? The ancient Greeks buried redheads alive because they thought that they became vampires when they died and the only way to stop this was... Burying them alive! I wonder how that felt for them.
