Big K, you have ask a difficult question so I will give you what I will call my opinion. There are many great dogs out there many mixed breeds as well as Registered pure breds. Ive had dogs all my life (35yrs) and different dogs for different purposes. Currently we have 2 female spayed Dobermans and 1 nuetered male, as well as a nuetered Boxer and a toy poodle. I love them all and the Dobermans have been schooled and are like children to us. Im a LEO and I feel my wife is more secure at home when Im at work (I work 8:00 PM to 4:00 AM). We have about an acre of our property fenced in with a 5 ft chain link fence to insure they cant get out of the yard. There very protective and extremely smart, we have been married 10+ yrs and have no children yet but I think the dogs would be very receptive to a new addition to the family. We have 3 nephews and the dogs love them and also keep a watchfull eye on them. They take turns going over to our cabin with me and are the best companions I could ever want. Now the poodle is also very intelligent but wants alot more attention. She would be considered more of a family dog. One dog that is very calm and loveing is a beagle,Ive seen many beagles and their all very loving. I see you have two horses and I know a few people who like blue heelers(SP) because they make great companions and go along when they ride the horse trails. Maybe you could look around at a few dogs and see which one your heart falls for. They are just to many good dogs to name one the best breed. Hope this helps!

I have had all kinds of animals. If you have horses then you know what animal maintainence is. Dogs would be great as you can take them along when you exercise your horses. You need calmer dogs
like labs or mixed shelter dogs needing a home. They are always neutered. Neutered animals are calmer. 2 dogs get along great but test the personalities first. You can do this at the shelter. We have 1 male and 1 female rescued dogs and they are like so into each other and have so much fun. They do not bark unless someone is approaching the house or something outside is not right.
Blue heeler lab mix 80 lbs and black and white Australian Cattle dog. Need lots of outdoor space for these kind of dogs.
Cats are independant and if you house one with the horses can catch mice and probably get on with the horses.
Depends on how much room you have and how much work you want!!

I have owned almost every kind of pet. Right now I am owned by 4 Boston Terriers (the best!), a Spitz, a small mixed breed, 3 cats, an African Grey, a Cockatiel, and I baby-sit my daughter's Husky days she is at work.

1 cockateil, 1 Japnese Chin(small dog) and oddly enough the little guy shares our home with 6 cats that about the same size as him. Which is the best the dog I think he's the most fun.

You already have the best - horses. But almost all animals are great. We have 6 horses, 4 dogs (austrailan shepherds and crosses), 1 cat (who thinks she is a dog), chickens, ducks, guineas, a goldfish, a lizard, a turtle and a large herd of goats.
