Whenever I need to make a public speech, I end up talking really really fast! Last time I started my speech, it was great, then my legs started shaking. Everyone made fun of the other people who shook during their speeches, so I didn't want them to see it, so I started talking fast to get through it. In the next few days, if I make another good speech, I will get some extra credit points which I really need. I can practice hour after hour, but I still end up talking fast. Then nobody can even understand me except my best friends. I am naturally a fast talker, and sometimes I just slam words together.

Any helpful ideas?

I have the exact same problem. It took my step-father 6 months to understand me during normal conversation when he first met my mother. I found during a speech class I took in high school that if I made some kind of symbol on my written speech after every couple of words, I slowed down. The rule was, every time I saw the symbol, I had to take a breath, which gave me just enough pause between phrases to slow myself down.

Hope that helps!

The reason you talk so fast is that you and everyone else in the class are nervous. Try to imagine that you are having a nice slow conversation with good friends. There is nothing to be afraid of. My speech teacher always said: You are the expert! The more speeches you make, the less nervous you will be. Just relax and enjoy your time in the spot light. It is possible you know, even for the shy ones. Be prepared and practice your speech. I was taught to use note cards and not to write my speeches out. Make good eye contact and smile.

I have the same problem, and I failed a speech once because it was too short, I spoke so fast I squashed 6 min. in to 3:55 min, and i needed 4 to pass. I havent really gotten a great solution, but it helps when I have like a timer of somesort, so that way I can see how long I have been up there.

if you use note cards or something for your speech, write on the top of them RELAX. If everyone else had to do the speech there is nothign to worry about, they had to do the same thing you did and understand. Speaking in front of a large group is very difficult, and takes a lot of practice to master it. Just keep reminding yourself you have nothign to worry about and relax!

You're speaking fast because you're nervous. Before you start, calm down, take a deep breath, and if you find yourself speaking fast, make sure that you calm down and take a deep breath. Just think that you're still practicing it, and you're not doing it in front of people. Also, a glass of water can sometimes help, so you can take a drink when you're doing your speach.
