Relax! We're all nervous when we start learning anything. No one expects anything of substance out of you when you're just learning.

One other important tip - do NOT worry about what other people think of you and/or your inexperience. The fact of the matter is that a) people are too busy focusing on themselves to worry about you and b) no one cares how good or bad you are anyway.

Once you've been in class for about a month, certain steps will become second nature and you'll actually look forward to going to class.

All this sounds soooooo hokey (like something your parents would tell you) but it happens to be the truth. Good luck!

Congratulations on your decision and there is nothing to be nervous about. It will be fun. There will be a bunch of beginners just like you, and other people are too busy with their own steps anyway to worry about how other people look. Wear comfortable clothes and comfortable shoes. If you don't have dance shoes yet - wear something with leather sole, like old dress shoes. Why old? They need to be comfortable, and you don't want to ruin your best pair by some guy stepping on them accidentally. Make sure they are not flip-flop type, or else you will be dancing out of your shoes on every back step you take. Bring a pair of socks with you just in case you decide that shoes are bothering you. Some studios don't allow street shoes at all, so the socks might come handy in this case. For clothes - wear something that allows you to take a large step without restricting your movement. Don't wear your workout clothes though, find somehing dressier than that. Most importantly - prepare to have a lot of fun.

i assume u are a ger.

if u are joining the beginners class, pray hard that ur male partner is a good learner... coz in ballroom it is based alot on body contact that brings about the movement. and the leading would most probably come from the male. just relax and receive the signal... else u guys will be stepping on each other's feet.

take deep breaths and big steps. coz travelling is essential in ballroom. and once u take big steps, you will hold ur weight and not bounce so much, making urself look more elegant.

listen to ur instructor carefully. and try to copy as much as you can. dun worry about memorising the steps. as long as you can move around in unison, u are fine.

dressing: be simple and comfortable. make sure u can stretch urself left right front and back. shoes is important. no sneakers! sport shoes absolute no no. preferbly wear heels that are not too thin. wedges heels are ideal. if u are afraid, bring a pair of socks and put them on and use them as dance shoes.

*additional info: arch your body from C5, well if u are a health science student u will understand. look far. hold ur framework. it will make u look like u are a princess.

1. Put some gum in your mouth... for breath control

2. If this is a group lesson stand as close to the middle of the dance group as possible, this way your able to better see your instructor.

3. Don't try to take all of what you are taught in. Keep the basic steps in your head. Many of the steps you will learn will be applicable in other dance routines too, but the speed or tempo will have a different beat.

4. Take along a little notepad, after the lesson think about what you were shown and then try to draw it in the notebook

First class? There's nothing to worry about. They know you're new, and they design beginner classes to be fun and easy. If they didn't they might run off potential customers. The atmosphere in every studio I've ever been in is designed to be as close to stress-free as possible for the new student, and if it isn't for more advanced students, that's because they choose to make it that way because of individual learning style.

Think positive! But whatever you do, don't appear to be afraid or intimidated. Believe in yourself. You can do it. If you mess you, don't worry. That just means you are really trying at it. Work hard if it's something you really want to do. Remember no ones perfect. Good luck to you!
